Ever had a great idea …. that didn’t quite work out the way you expected? That’s exactly what happened with these Vintage Heart Ornaments!
I found these great heart ornaments in the clearance aisle at Target after Christmas and I had a plan for them before I walked out the door!
Vintage Heart Ornaments
I knew I didn’t want to leave them in their shiny state – just not the look I had in mind this year. My plan was to tone them down by covering them with a coat of Modge Podge and tissue paper … simple right? Not so this time. The paint from the ornaments kept bleeding right through the tissue paper making a complete mess.
So I scrapped that idea and tried a couple of other options – ribbon? – nope – thicker tissue? – didn’t look right. Nothing worked. By this time my frustration was mounting. Ever been there? This was supposed to be such a simple project!
Then I remembered … I had a box of parchment paper from a previous project and wondered if that might do the trick.
I began by tearing the paper into small strips. I liked the look of the frayed edges when it was torn.
With the parchment paper being a slightly heavier paper, each strip was soaked in a small bowl of water to make it more pliable.
Each heart was coated with Modge Podge.
The dampened parchment paper pieces were placed on the heart ornaments, overlapping as I went, using more Modge Podge as I worked.
Once all of the hearts were covered, they were left to dry. I was beginning to like the slightly distressed look the parchment paper had given the ornaments.
When dry, each creation was brushed with a very light touch of white paint in various places to give them a further distressed look.
In a short time, the paint had dried and each ornament received another coat of Modge Podge and was sprinkled with a thin coat of iridescent glitter.
The shiny gold tops were just too bright for the look, so were toned down with a thin coat of silver metallic paint I had on hand.
I toyed with the idea of adding flowers or ribbons to the top of the vintage heart ornaments, but in the end decided I like the simplicity of a simple cream ribbon hanger.
Not what I intended when I started, but I loved the finished look.
Isn’t that the way life is sometimes? We have a plan and often it doesn’t turn out our way, but instead so much better than what we ever dreamed.
